Comments:

I went to San Antonio College for 3 years after graduation (changed majors a few times). During that same period began studying martial arts. Quit college to teach martial arts for a year until I figured out what college degree path I wanted to pursue and never made it back into the academic world. Starting in September of 1973, I managed a branch location of my karate instructor's school in Austin for 3 years and then bought that location from him in 1976. Taught full time professionally for about 23 years then took my present position as a Letter Carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in early 1996. Self employment had been rewarding in a number of ways but did not provide for a stable retirement like my present job does.
I still have my karate school and continue to teach part time. I have been active in active in martial arts competition over the years since the early 70's. In the early 80's I was a regionally rated competitor in the Texas/Louisiana area by a couple of national martial arts magazine. I won my forms division at the International Karate Championships in Long Beach, CA 5 different times during the 90's. Most recently I have been a member of the U.S. Kempo Team competing at the World Kempo Championships in Budapest, Hungary in 2007- Gold Medal; Faro, Portugal in 2008 - 2 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals; and Bucharest, Romania in 2009 - 1 Silver and 5 Bronze Medals. At each of these events I was the oldest competitor in the event. I compete in the 36 and over age group.
I have also taught seminars across the United States as well as Ireland and England. I have also traveled to Switzerland a couple of times with my wife, who is a singer, while she performed at a country music festival there.

I read your "In Memory" post about Mark Smith. It sounds like you guys were pretty close and I offer my condolences to not only his family but to you for the loss of a good friend. In the few times that I Mark and I exchanged messages here he always mentioned you so I know you guys were close. My good friend, and our classmate, Rick Dermody passed a couple years ago and I know that hit me hard but we did not stay as close over the years as it appears you and Mark were so I can appreciate your loss. Our unsuccessful attempt at being roommates was handled badly by both of us and I just want to apologize for my part in that situation. I could have and should have handled things much differently and better. I hope you are well and again my condolences.

It is sad to get the news of Mark's passing.  The "In Memory" section of this site keeps getting bigger...sad to hear of old friends no longer here, even sadder that I have not kept in touch with people better.  RIP Mark.

I have nothing but positive memories of my old friend Rick Dermody.  We became close friends when he moved to San Antonio at the start of our senior year.  He was my number one running buddy from then through 3 years together at SAC and was my first room mate when we moved to Austin together in the fall of '73. He moved back to San Antonio the next year but we stayed in touch for years afterward.  Seeing him again was always one of the highlights of class reunions for me.  I was him last at our 40th reunion.  He had been battling skin cancer but was given a clean bill of health after treatment.  We stayed in touch off and on he next year or so.  I was hit hard by the news I got at the end of last year that he was in hospice because the cancer had returned.  He was a genuinely good human being and the world is a lesser place with him gone.  He is missed by many who knew him.  RIP                 Brian Duffy

After a 9 year lay off from competition, I got an invitation to be a member of the US Kempo Team in 2007 competing at the World Kempo Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Our 4 man team was one of the smallest but we came home with 5 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals, and 2 Bronze medals. I only won one medal but it was Gold and came with the title of "World Champion" for that year.

My wife Lee singing one of the songs she wrote at the Col des Roches Country Music Festival in Switzerland, 2005. Playing the guitar next to her is Amy Nelson (Willie's daughter). Lee sang back up vocals for Amy and veteran country singer songwriter Freddy Powers at this show.
